Rice-Based Enzyme Powders Are Perfect Gentle Scrubs

Rice Bran & Pineapple Enzymes

Pineapple enzyme are extracted from the natural fruit enzyme of pineapple, so it is based on the natural ingredients. Rice-bran has been used for years in the Japanese cosmetology to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, that certainly makes the complexion to appear brighter and radiant. Rice-bran is gentle on the skin and does not strip or pull the skin during the exfoliation, so this products can be good for sensitive skin. Which rice-bran exfoliator to choose?

“Rice bran benefits the skin by effectively removing impurities while also providing skin-nourishing hydration. When activated with water, rice bran powder not only decongests pores, but also can brighten, diminish hyperpigmentation, and enable skin to better absorb the next steps in your skincare ritual.” by Tatcha

I went to the same cosmetologist- Rita, from a salon in London for over ten years. Every three months, I would go back for a Dermatologica facial with extractions, and Rita has used a rice-based, gentle exfoliation, which left my skin radiant for days! I bought the exact product Dermatologica Exfoliator, which is on the pricey side at 74g GBP 54. The cost was high, but there were no other alternatives, and the grounded rice I made at home did not bring such benefits at all.

Luckily, the powdered scrub lasts for many months, and it is a great cleansing scrub for travelling since it is not part of the liquid hand luggage rule.

I can say only the good comments about this scrub (apart from the price). It has a great consistency when mixed with water, is gentle enough for daily use, and my skin feels clean afterwards as well.

It was all wonderful until Indeed Lab Exfoliator II entered the market!

Same qualities as Dermatologica at a fraction of the price! It is also a powdered-based scrub with rice enzymes, but only GBP21 for 75g!!

I have used the Indeed product for about five years now! I love it and highly recommend it!

How to use it

I use another scrub on Saturdays to deeply clean my skin with a muslin towel. The rice-based Indeed scrub I use every single morning.

I use some product, add water, and scrub gently over the face in circular motions, avoiding the eye area. Then wash with lukewarm water, followed by colder water and always pat with paper tissues. I have stopped using facial towels a long time ago.

What is the difference except the price tag?

Here are the ingredients listed on Dermatologica website: Microcrystalline Cellulose, Magnesium Oxide, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Colloidal Oatmeal, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Hydrogenated Coconut Acid, Allantoin, Papain, Salicylic Acid, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, PCA, Populus Tremuloides Bark Extract, Cyclodextrin, Sodium Isethionate, Lauryl Methacrylate/Glycol Dimethacrylate Copolymer, Maltodextrin, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch Hydroxyethyl Ether, Water/Aqua/Eau, Limonene, Citric Acid.

This is for Indeed Lab:

Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate, Malic Acid, Sodium Carbonate, Peg-150, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sorbitol, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Silica, Hydrolyzed Opuntia Ficus Indica Flower Extract, Dextrin Palmitate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Bromelain, Water, Butylene Glycol, Sorbitan Trioleate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Apium Graveolens (Celery) Seed Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract

Both scrubs have the bases of rice bran extract, the Dermatologica has Salicylic acid (SA), which is great to use for breakouts, however, it is not recommended to use every day as I heard it can strip the protective layer. I do like using salicylic acid once a week, but for this, I use a face wash, recommended by a beautician.

SA has been replaced in Indeed Lab products by Hyaluronic acid (HA) and pineapple enzymes. HA, I use it every day in the morning as well and highly recommend this serum after washing a face.

My Verdict

I continue using my favourite Indeed Lab Exfoliator II scrub going forward and highly recommend it for you to try. I have not had any reaction after daily use for many years.
