Best Skin Renewal Tools – Dermaroller for Face
What is a derma roller?
Derma roller is a device with tiny needles for use at home. After 6-8 weeks of use, I have noticed a significant improvement in my dark spots, large pores, and wrinkles. Initially, I bought a pricey version from a local store to realize I was paying only for the package! The device itself was the same as the alternative bought elsewhere. So, my first tip is not to overspend as the cheaper version does the same job.
“Home treatments rarely go deep enough to give dramatic results [for more affected skin] but can enhance exfoliation and product absorption,” says Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale New Haven Hospital and co-creator of Pure BioDerm. “Patients who are consistent with home treatments over a four to six month period can definitely see improvements.” (from Heathline.com)
Derma roller is used by gently rolling and massaging the face without excessive pressure, thus stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are “scaffolding of our facial cells structure”.
The first tip is to use a derma roller after serum application. This way the product sinks into the deeper levels of the dermis and thus increases the efficacy. In other words, your products will work much better if you combine them with derma rolling massage.
Benefits of using a derma roller regularly:
- Fading away fine wrinkles
- Minimises large pores
- Promotes collagen production
- Reduces excess sebum
- Fading away acne scars
- Promotes elastin production
- Firms skin texture
Dermaroller
The 0.3 mm fine roller tips made of high-quality surgical steel gently penetrate the top layer of skin during use, reliably remove dead skin cells and stimulate certain receptors in the skin to promote the natural production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – and these are known to be essential factors for the elasticity and firmness of the skin.
Review of dermaroller
My latest derma roller size 0.3mm I got from Amazon; is recommended to use small sizes like 0.25mm to 0.5mm for a face. This size does not damage the skin, but you should not pierce your skin with it, gently massage it according to the massage line.
My latest derma roller size is 0.3mm and I got it from Amazon (I do change rollers every 2-3 years). For beginners, it is best to give the skin time to get used to the procedure and use the derma roller with smaller 0.25mm needles. For larger than 0.5mm derma roller needles, I recommend going to a salon to do it properly without any health risks.
This size does not damage the skin, but you should not pierce your skin with it, gently massage it according to the massage line.
Before use, I clean it with an antibacterial spray (easier to clean) and start the massage from the forehead, then the cheeks and lastly on the chin, avoiding the eye area or any scars. I gently massage five times in each direction: horizontal, vertical, and diagonal. After I finish, I apply Retinol serum and wait before for about ten minutes before a night cream application.
I only use the derma roller once or twice a week in the evening. Ensure to use the SPF protection cream as your skin will be sensitive.
In my opinion, derma rolling can benefit all skin types, especially as an anti-ageing tool. If you do have sensitive skin, apply less pressure and be mindful.
How many sessions will you need to see a result?
I have used it weekly for many years, but I recall seeing a result after a month of consistent use. It all in the end comes down to consistency. Once or twice a week I use a derma roller and on another day I use red light therapy.
When is it time to replace the derma roller?
It is recommended to replace the derma roller every 2-3 years. I don’t have a certain preference for antibacterial spray, but do clean the tool before and after every single time.
Dr. King cites a study which, she explains, “found that the technique can reduce atrophic [sunken or pitted] scars.”
Warnings
I would not recommend using a derma roller on other parts of the body like legs or hands. I have tried and have damaged my skin this way, so avoid and be gentle with face massage, no pressing, just gentle rolling over the facial lines.
