Risks of Using Expired Old Makeup
Sometimes it is just not possible to keep a track of when we replace our make up with daily to-dos. I did replace my mascara once it was dry or replaced lipstick when broken or finished, however it is only now after experience unpleasant eye infection which over month to clear up, I realized that this needs topic needs attention. From then onwards, I ensure that I replace mascara, lipstick and same time tooth brush heads. I also clean the make up and hair brushes once a week. My skin has definitely cleared up and I have less pimples. So question is how often to change the old make up and what the risks of using old or expired make up?
Dr. Fazeela Abbasi of Euromed Clinic Dubai confirms, “Expired makeup can harbour bacteria which can lead to skin irritations like acne or rashes and even eye infections. It’s really important to not use eye makeup past its expiry date, as this can be harmful to the delicate eye area.”
How long do makeup products last and is safe to use?
Recommendation by Mayo Clinic:
Mascara and liquid eyeliner – once open use up to 3 months
Lip, eyebrow, eyeliner pencils – up to a year
Foundation if water based a year, oil-based 18 months max
Powdered products, when stored in a dry place, for up to 2 years
Cream-based blushes and products every 6 months
Something to really think about the next time you are using mascara or foundation.
I am now adding an event reminder on my phone to change the mascara, eyeliner pencil, concealer, and lipstick.
On the upside, it is a good motivation to actually use more of the product in full, and recycle once it is out.
The risks of getting the infection are so high if you use old makeup products. Just remember, these are not made to last forever! Check your makeup for recycling ASAP to keep beautiful and healthy skin in check.
Risks of using expired makeup products
Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions
Expired makeup can break down chemically, leading to changes in its composition. This can cause skin irritation, redness, itching, and rashes.
People with sensitive skin are especially prone to experiencing allergic reactions from expired products.
Infections
Over time, makeup products, especially those used around the eyes and mouth, can become breeding grounds for bacteria, yeast, and mould. Using these contaminated products can lead to eye infections (like conjunctivitis), skin infections, and cold sores.
Reduced Efficacy
The active ingredients in makeup products can lose their effectiveness over time, leading to reduced performance. For example, SPF in foundations may no longer provide adequate sun protection, and anti-ageing components might not work as intended.
Changes in Texture, Color, and Smell:
Expired makeup can change in texture, becoming clumpy or separating. It may also develop an off smell, indicating spoilage. These changes can make the makeup difficult to apply evenly and can affect the final look
Harmful Chemical Changes:
Some ingredients in makeup can degrade into potentially harmful substances over time. For example, oils can go rancid, leading to the formation of free radicals that can damage the skin.
Eye Area Risks:
Products like mascara and eyeliner are particularly risky when expire. The eyes are highly sensitive and prone to infection, and using old products can introduce harmful bacteria
Check the expiration date on the products, if not there, when did you start using them? For any makeup items add on your phone an alert to replace it.
Take a good care of your skin and ensure to clear your make up bag.
